ABOUT KFAR SABA URBAN FARM
About Us
Kfar Saba Urban Farm is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit rescue sanctuary and community healing space where animals and people come together to recover, connect, and grow. We rescue and rehabilitate a wide range of animals — including a variety of farm animals, exotic parrots, giant tortoises, dogs, cats, and everything in between — providing them with a safe, loving forever home. In return, these animals help foster powerful, therapeutic connections with children, trauma survivors, families, and individuals in need of support.
Our Mission
Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and provide a forever home to animals in need, while fostering a deeper understanding of animal care and welfare through the lens of Jewish values. Guided by the principles of tza’ar ba’alei chayim (compassion for all living creatures) and tikkun olam (repairing the world), we create opportunities for healing, education, and connection. Through educational programs, private group tours, and hands-on experiences, we aim to inspire empathy, responsibility, and kindness—values deeply rooted in Jewish tradition. By engaging the public in meaningful interactions with animals, we seek to build a more compassionate and spiritually grounded world for both animals and the people who care for them.
What We Do
-
Animal Rescue: We provide shelter, safety, and love for abandoned, abused, and neglected animals — offering them a second chance at life in alignment with the Jewish value of tza’ar ba’alei chayim, the sacred obligation to prevent the suffering of living creatures. Every rescue is an act of compassion and moral responsibility, reflecting our commitment to honoring life in all its forms.
-
Rehabilitation: Our team works tirelessly to support each animal’s physical, emotional, and spiritual recovery. This includes providing essential medical care, nutritional support, and behavioral healing, all grounded in patience, respect, and dignity. Inspired by the Jewish values of chesed (loving-kindness) and refuah shleimah (complete healing), we approach every animal as a sacred life worthy of wholeness and peace.
-
Education: We offer educational tours and programs for schools, synagogues, churches, community groups, and families, blending animal care education with core Jewish teachings. Participants learn not only about animal welfare, but also about tikkun olam (repairing the world), bal tashchit (avoiding needless harm), and the everyday mitzvot of kindness and stewardship. Our goal is to cultivate a generation that sees animals not as possessions, but as partners in creation — worthy of care, compassion, and respect.

We Honor Our Founder

Kfar Saba Urban Farm was created in memory of our beloved dad and grandfather, Joshua Shapiro — lovingly known as Saba, the Hebrew word for grandfather. He was the heart of our family and the quiet force behind this sanctuary.
Saba had a deep, instinctive love for all living beings. Throughout his life, he rescued not only animals, but people too — offering both comfort and dignity to those in need. What began as his backyard refuge grew into a sanctuary rooted in his values of compassion, humility, and healing.
Today, every animal we save and every person who finds peace here carries forward the legacy Saba left behind — one of unconditional love, quiet strength, and a deep belief in second chances.
Education
Humane Animal Treatment
At Kfar Saba Urban Farm, we are deeply committed to promoting humane, ethical treatment of all animals. As a sanctuary founded on compassion and education, we actively teach the importance of adopting rather than buying, the lifelong responsibility of animal guardianship, and the urgent need to end the exploitation of animals for profit or convenience. Through immersive, values-based education, we challenge harmful norms, raise awareness about the impact of human actions on animals and ecosystems, and empower people to make compassionate, informed choices. For those who support animal rights and believe in building a more just and empathetic world, our mission is your mission.
Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation
Animal rescue is a moral imperative — the urgent act of saving animals from cruelty, neglect, abandonment, or life-threatening environments. At Kfar Saba Urban Farm, we rescue animals who have been discarded, abused, or exploited, offering them not just safety, but a second chance at life rooted in dignity and love. This includes domestic animals, farm animals, exotic parrots, and wildlife in distress. When we encounter species beyond our care capacity — includinginjured wildlife or endangered animals — we act as a bridge, connecting individuals with appropriate rescue organizations and licensed rehabilitation partners. Our work is grounded in the belief that every life matters and that true compassion means taking action — not only to save, but to advocate, educate, and help our community respond responsibly to animals in crisis.
Animal Therapies for Humans
At Kfar Saba Urban Farm, we believe in a powerful cycle of healing: we rescue animals in need, and in turn, we gentlytrain and rehabilitate them to help heal people. This approach, known as Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT), uses the natural bond between animals and humans to support emotional, psychological, and even physical well-being. Many of our therapy animals are former rescues — once neglected or abused, now becoming partners in healing for trauma survivors, children with special needs, and others facing emotional challenges. It’s a full-circle mission of compassion: Who, rescued who?
